“Waste to Hydrogen system dynamic modelling” wins the Best Application Paper Award

The award was conferred during the Asian Modelica & FMI Conference 2026 to the HyRES Unit researcher Michele Bolognese.

The paper titled Waste to Hydrogen system dynamic modelling and written by Michele Bolognese with the colleagues Emanuele Martinelli, Michele Urbani, Matteo Testi and the MyRechemical-Nextchem collaborators Annarita Salladini, Alessia Borgogna and Maria Rosaria Pepe was selected by the Program Committee as the recipient of the Award.

The paper was awarded as it demonstrates outstanding academic originality, technical depth, and practical value, and has made a distinguished contribution to the scholarly exchange at the conference.ย

The Award demonstrates that the Centre for Sustainable Energy is not only up-to-date with modelling tools but is actually a pioneer in exploring and experimenting with them.ย Michele Bolognese specialises in dynamic system modelling. Using Modelica, an equation-based object-oriented language, he develops physics-based models of hydrogen and energy systems that reproduce the time-dependent behaviour of the plant and its components, and supports their design, control verification and operation. The HyRES Unit has a strong experience in dynamic modelling and elaboration of scenarios, and offer the opportunity to improve and optimize systems and industrial processes through numerical modeling by using software such as Modelica and proprietary code.

The Asian Modelica & FMI Conference 2026 took place from 20 to 22 September in Hangzhou (China) and was organized by the Beihang University (at Hangzhou campus) and Nanjing Yuansi SimTek Co., Ltd. in cooperation with the Modelica Association.

During the event, the HyRES researcher had the opportunity to make two presentations:

  • ๐——๐˜†๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ฐ ๐— ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ฎ ๐—ฃ๐—˜๐—  ๐—˜๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—น๐˜†๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐— ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—›๐˜†๐—ฑ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐—›๐˜†๐—ฑ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐—ฆ๐˜†๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ presented a model of the complete system developed in the REMEDHYS project. The model follows how the electrolyser and the metal hydride tanks respond to each other over time, from hydrogen production to its absorption and release in the storage.
The presentation is part of the work implemented within the REMEDHYS project.
  • ๐—ช๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—›๐˜†๐—ฑ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐˜€๐˜†๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ ๐—ฑ๐˜†๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ฐ ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด presented the dynamic model of the complete syngas purification chain developed within the IPCEI Hy2Rome project, which turns waste into a clean hydrogen stream. In this model the gasifier is integrated as a surrogate model through FMI.

Michele Bolognese was also selected to chair the Thermal Management session of the conference.

The event is an important occasion for people working with modeling, simulation, and control applications such as Modelica language designers, tool vendors and library developers, and that use Modelica and/or other Modelica Association standards and it provides users with the opportunity to stay informed about the latest language, library, and tool developments, and to exchange best practices and lessons learnt on similar modeling problems.
