SMHYLES

Safe, sustainable and Modular HYbrid systems for Long-duration Energy storage and grid Services
The EU-funded SMHYLES project will develop sustainable hybrid energy storage systems (HESS) by combining two low critical raw material storage technologies.
Horizon Europe
JAN 2024 – DEC 2027

The overarching objective of the SMHYLES project is to design and demonstrate, at a relevant industrial scale, safe and sustainable HESSs based on the smart combination of low-critical raw materials and aqueous ESS (batteries and supercapacitors) capable of medium-to-long duration energy storage and provision of multiple services.

The project will mainly deal with 3 demonstrators: the design of innovative storage components of the two different HESS, one a modular VRFB coupled with an aqueous hybrid supercapacitor and a salt-based battery coupled with an aqueous hybrid supercapacitor.

As part of the project and battery design, a novel digital tool will be development to ensure and optimal design from the start, planning, and real time management of the HESS.

THE ROLE OF FBK

FBK is acting as project coordinator and will also be in charge of the package of activities “Digital-twins for HESS design and real-time management”. FBK is also involved in the flexible and modular design for flow batteries.
