Significant knowledge gaps exist about the amount of anthropogenic H2 (in the atmosphere) from the H2 value chain. It is required to improve the capability to quantify small and large releases, delivering validated methodologies and techniques for measuring or calculating them. A universally accepted and open-access inventory is needed to better quantify the leaks from the H2 value chain. The NHyRA project is designed to address these needs. The project will deliver a “H2 releases” inventory to serve as a reference for the scientific and industrial community. New or adequately adapted experimental, theoretical, and simulation methodologies will be validated to perform laboratory or in-field measurements to achieve this goal. Experimental tests will also be performed on the most critical elements of the H2 value chains by the partners of the Consortium. A complete picture of the H2 releases’ scenarios in the middle (2030) and long (2050) term will be developed to enable decision-makers to identify and prioritize effective mitigation actions. And finally, the project will formulate recommendations for Standards and Technical Specifications.
THE ROLE OF FBK
Fondazione Bruno Kessler leads the package of activities “Hydrogen release scenarios” (WP5) where the main objective is to quantify the H2 releases from future hydrogen economy scenarios and provide recommendations in terms of mitigation strategies identifying relevant future H2 demand and value chain Scenarios.
WP5 aims to provide the data on the H2 releases (both under unmitigated and mitigated regimes) relative to the most significant H2 economy development Scenarios. Scope of the task is to make sure that the data provided are suitable for the estimation of the climate impact of the envisioned H2 economy development Scenarios.
FBK also participates actively in:
- the definition of the H2 supply chains and unit processes with the main objective is to identify the most critical elements of the hydrogen value chain and to develop a comprehensive inventory to collect and make available in standardized form the information and data about H2 emissions in the value chain.
- the definition of the H2 supply chains and unit processes where the main objective is to quantify the total potential H2 releases along the whole H2 value chain, considering their different building blocks (e.g., production, handling, end-uses, etc.), ranking the main elements of the H2 value chain. Besides, potential mitigation strategies will be identified.
