Multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) represent an innovative approach to alloy development. An MPEA consists of significant atomic fractions of multiple elements. Recently, these alloys have attracted considerable attention for their potential use as electrodes in hydrogen electrolysers as an alternative to noble metals. The versatility of MPEAs lies in the ability to tailor their properties by modifying their composition. Despite extensive research in this field, the long-term stability of these complex alloys, particularly in acidic environments, is still far from satisfactory.

This study will focus on addressing research gaps in the field of alloy design, including the role of each element and the effect of alloy composition on the long-term performance of electrocatalysts in an acidic environment. The designed MPEAs will be produced using radio-frequency sputtering. These alloys will be characterised using electrochemical characterisation techniques to determine their composition, catalytic activity and durability. The main objective of this research is to improve the corrosion resistance and durability of alloy electrocatalysts in acidic/alkaline environments. We aim to develop new alloy compositions with the desired catalytic performance and improved corrosion resistance/durability properties. We aim to improve alloy design guidelines with the aid of experimental analysis and modelling approaches.

THE ROLE OF FBK: FBK is the host institution for the visiting researcher. 

All project activities, including both the synthesis of the alloys and their chemical and physical characterisation, will be carried out in the laboratories of the Center for Sustainable Energy. FBK will make available to the visiting researcher not only the laboratories but also the expertise of the center’s researchers.
