AMON

Development of a next generation AMmONia FC system
Ammonia can be used as a hydrogen carrier to increase the energy system’s flexibility. The EU-funded AMON project will develop an innovative system to convert ammonia into electric power using a solid oxide fuel cell.
Clean Hydrogen Partnership
JAN 2023 – MAR 2027

The project’s key focus is on designing the critical components, such as the fuel cell, ammonia cracker, and anode gas recirculation. Additionally, the project will engineer the balance of plant, validate compliance with ammonia use, and manufacture an overall ammonia fuel cell system. Finally, the system will be tested in a port area to assess its practicality. Overall, the AMON project seeks to create a sustainable and efficient system for utilising ammonia as a hydrogen carrier to support clean energy solutions.

Scientific Objectives:

  • Design and develop a fuel cell stack module at a scale of 8 kWel, tested and qualified to convert ammonia into power, possibly using the internal reforming capacity of a solid oxide cell operating at high temperature and managing the power output through the control of the cell fuel utilization.
  • Qualify a system 100% tolerant to ammonia in all the components and related materials
  • Target 70% system electric efficiency
  • Qualify the system for at least 3000 hrs operation with demonstrated 90% availability in the operating hours and less than 3% degradation rate at nominal power condition measured over 1000 hours of continuous operation.

Economic and Social Objectives:

  • Diversification and security of energy supply
  • Unlock wide markets potential and foster efficient conversion systems to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors such as maritime, autonomous power systems, where volumetric density and long-term storage solutions are key requirements.
  • Raise industrial interest in ammonia and foster the development of new markets and new jobs.

THE ROLE OF FBK

  • Coordination and administrative / financial / data management of the project
  • Support in the P&ID by dynamic modelling
  • Testing of short stack in laboratories
  • Performance of the factory acceptance test (FAT) of the final integrated components
  • Assessment of the techno-economic and environmental aspects of the final system
  • Leader of the communication, dissemination and exploitation Word Package and in charge of C&E activities of the project.
